MiHaven Training is creating many career pathways for our students! We believe in the transformative power of education and are committed to not only imparting knowledge but also paving the way for your professional growth and success.

The Queensland Government invests in training based on industry advice to provide Queenslanders with the skills they need to gain meaningful and sustainable employment through the provider of their choice.

Government funding aims to minimise skills shortages, focus on training for jobs and industries that are in demand, and increase the number of Queenslanders with formal post-school qualifications.

The Skills Assure Supplier (SAS) Framework is a key action from the Good Jobs, Great Training: Queensland Skills Strategy 2024–2028, a five (5) year plan to further strengthen the state’s Vocational Education and Training (VET) system. The SAS Framework is administered by the Department of Trade, Employment and Training (‘Department’).

Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) must be approved to deliver Queensland Government subsidised training under the SAS Framework. MiHaven Training has been preapproved by the Department to be a Skills Assure Supplier (SAS) to deliver subsided training and assessment services under the VET Investment Program.

CAREER START INFO

The Career Start program provides individuals with the skills and support to start their career. The program provides training to help individuals find a job and supports those already employed to move into more skilled roles or full-time employment, including after completing an apprenticeship or traineeship. Career Start supports delivery of entry level training to student, Trainees and Apprentices aligned with the skill outcomes required by industry.

Career Start offers two (2) training pathways, either a general training pathway OR employment-based apprenticeship or traineeship pathway.

Under Career Start, you may access up to two (2) funded training places through one (1) of the following options:

  • A qualification in a certificate III under the general training pathway and an apprenticeship or traineeship. If the apprenticeship or traineeship is completed first, you are not eligible to access a general training pathway qualification under Career Start; OR
  • Two (2) apprenticeships and traineeships in either a certificate II or III (school-based apprenticeships and traineeships are included in this total).
CAREER BOOST INFO

Career Boost provides eligible individuals with one (1) subsidised training place in either a certificate IV, diploma, or advanced diploma qualification under the general training pathway or a higher-level apprenticeship/traineeship certificate IV or above and up to two (2) subsidised skill sets. The program delivers training designed to help individuals develop the higher-level skills necessary to secure employment, advance their careers or progress to further education and training through related university or tertiary qualifications.

Under Career Boost, you may access either:

  • One (1) funded training place in either a certificate IV, diploma of advanced diploma qualification under the general training pathway; OR
  • A higher-level apprenticeship or traineeship in certificate IV or above.

In addition, under Career Boost, you may access up to two (2) funded skill sets in priority industries or sectors.

If you have already accessed two (2) apprenticeships or traineeships through a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship or Career Start within the last ten (10) years, you are not eligible to undertake an apprenticeship or traineeeship under Career Boost.

You cannot do two (2) general training pathway qualifications under Career Boost.

VET in Schools 2026

The VET in Schools 2026 program helps secondary school students prepare for post-school employment by providing access to a nationally recognised Vocational Education and Training (VET) qualification that aligns to their chosen career pathway or helps them to transition into post-school vocational qualifications.

Eligible Queensland school students in years ten (10), eleven (11) and twelve (12) can undertake one (1) funded VET in Schools general training pathway certificate I or II level qualification while they are still at school.

Apprenticeships and Traineeships

University isn’t your only choice!

When it comes to acquiring qualifications, the traditional route of attending university is no longer the sole choice. Those who wish to immediately develop practical skills and gain hands-on experience can explore the numerous apprenticeship and traineeship opportunities available in Australia’s labour market.

MiHaven Training is registered and regulated by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) and is preapproved by the Department of Trade, Employment and Training (DTET) to be a Skills Assure Supplier (SAS) to deliver subsided training and assessment services under the Vocational Education and Training (VET) Investment Program.

Starting an apprenticeship or traineeship is a level playing field for all, regardless of age. Older apprentices and trainees bring with them maturity, reliability, life experience, and knowledge that can benefit not only employers but also their fellow colleagues.

Types of
Apprenticeships / Traineeships

There are three (3) types of traineeships and apprenticeships.

Full-time

A full-time apprentice or trainee must work:

  • About thirty-eight (38) hours per week, and
  • Regular hours or a regular roster (not casual or irregular).

Full-time traineeships typically take one (1) – two (2) years*, whereas full-time apprenticeships typically take three (3) – four (4) years*.

*These are guidelines because apprenticeships and traineeships are competency-based, not time-based.

Part-time

A part-time apprentice or trainee must work:

  • At least fifteen (15) hours paid work a week, averaged out over each four (4) week period during the training contract, and
  • Regular hours or a regular roster (not casual or irregular).
Apprentices and trainees with a disability may be able to work less than fifteen (15) hours a week, with approval.

Part-time arrangements usually take twice as long as full-time arrangements. So, if a full-time plumbing apprenticeship takes four (4) years* to complete, doing it part-time will take eight (8) years*.

*These are guidelines because apprenticeships and traineeships are competency-based, not time-based.

Adult and Mature age

Commencing an Apprenticeship/Traineeship is the same for all, no matter what age. Older Apprentices/Trainees provide maturity, reliability, life experience and knowledge that can be valuable not only to employers, but to other staff. A mature-aged Apprentice/Trainee’s existing skills and experience (gained through education, training, work and life experiences) may provide them with Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) credit and may reduce their training time. Employing a mature age worker may attract specific incentives through the Australian Government.

School-based

As a school-based apprentice or trainee, you must:

  • Be paid for the work you do,
  • Work at least seven point five (7.5) hours a week, averaged over every three (3) months, for every twelve (12) months of your training contract, and
  • Work at least three hundred and seventy-five (375) hours/fifty (50) days for every twelve (12) months of your training contract.

There is a limit to the amount of training that school-based apprentices can do while they are at school. These limits ensure the apprentice has enough workplace skills to match the theoretical training they have undertaken with their training organisation.
The limits depend on the full-time equivalent ‘nominal term’ (length) of the apprenticeship:
• Four (4) year nominal term – a maximum of thirty-three point three (33.3) % of the units of competency—set of skills or knowledge—required under your training plan;

  • Three (3) year nominal term – a maximum of forty (40) % of the units of competency; or
  • Two (2) year nominal term – a maximum of fifty (50) % of the units of competency.

Training limits do not apply to school-based trainees.
