CAREER START INFO
The Career Start program provides individuals with the skills and support to start their career, it helps support eligible students to complete their first post-school certificate III level qualification.
Career Start offers either a general training pathway or employment-based apprenticeship or traineeship pathway.
Under Career Start, an eligible individual may access up to two subsidised training places through one of the following options:
- a general qualification at certificate III AND an apprenticeship or traineeship, noting that if the apprenticeship or traineeship is done first, the individual is no longer eligible to access a general qualification under Career Start; OR
- two apprenticeships or traineeships at either certificate II or III, including school based apprenticeships or traineeships (SATs).
In addition, under Career Start, individuals may access one subsidised introductory-level skill set.
An individual cannot do two general pathway qualifications under Career Start.
CAREER BOOST INFO
The Career Boost program provides a government subsidy to support eligible students to access subsidised training in priority skill sets and selected certificate IV or higher qualifications.
Career Boost offers either a general training pathway or employment-based apprenticeship or traineeship pathway.
Under Career Boost, an eligible individual may access:
- one subsidised training place in either a certificate IV, diploma, or advanced diploma qualification under the general training pathway; OR
- a higher level apprenticeship or traineeship at certificate IV or above; AND

If the individual has already accessed two apprenticeships/traineeships through a school based apprenticeship or traineeship (SAT) or Career Start within the last 10 years, they are not eligible to undertake an apprenticeship/traineeship under Career Boost.
An individual cannot do two general pathway qualifications under Career Boost.
Apprenticeships & Traineeships
University isn’t your only choice!
When it comes to acquiring qualifications, the traditional route of attending university is no longer the sole choice. Those who wish to immediately develop practical skills and gain hands-on experience can explore the numerous apprenticeship and traineeship opportunities available in Australia’s labour market.
MiHaven Training is registered and regulated by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA), and is approved by the Department of Trade Education and Training (DTET) to issue nationally recognised qualifications for certain apprenticeships and traineeships through the User Choice program.
Depending on eligibility, Queenslanders can tap into a maximum of two government contributions, no matter their age. Starting an apprenticeship or traineeship is a level playing field for all, regardless of age. Older apprentices and trainees bring with them maturity, reliability, life experience, and knowledge that can benefit not only employers but also their fellow colleagues.
Types of
Apprenticeships / Traineeships
There are 3 types of Traineeships/Apprenticeships.
Full-time or Part-time
Full-time Apprentices/Trainees work and train an average of 38 hours per week and have ongoing employment.
• Part-time Apprentices/Trainees are rostered to work on a regular basis, working and training no less than 15 hours per week, averaged over a four-week cycle.
• Existing workers may be employed as an Apprentice/Trainee.
• The term of a part-time Apprenticeship/Traineeship is generally double that of the full-time Apprenticeship/Traineeship term.
Adult and Mature age
Commencing an Apprenticeship/Traineeship is the same for all, no matter what age. Older Apprentices/Trainees provide maturity, reliability, life experience and knowledge that can be valuable not only to employers, but to other staff. A mature-aged Apprentice/Trainee’s existing skills and experience (gained through education, training, work and life experiences) may provide them with Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) credit and may reduce their training time. Employing a mature age worker may attract specific incentives through the Australian Government.
School-based
School-based Apprentices/Trainees undertake an Apprenticeship/Traineeship as part of their high school studies (generally in years 10, 11 and 12). A school-based Apprentice/Trainee’s employment and/or training arrangements must impact on their school timetable for the program to be considered school-based. The term of a school-based Apprenticeship/Traineeship is generally double that of the full-time Apprenticeship/Traineeship.
