Career Start Information

The Career Start program provides individuals with the skills and support to start their career. The program provides training to help individuals find a job and supports those already employed to move into more skilled roles or full-time employment, including after completing an apprenticeship or traineeship. Career Start supports delivery of entry level training to student, Trainees and Apprentices aligned with the skill outcomes required by industry.

Career Start offers two (2) training pathways, either a general training pathway OR employment-based apprenticeship or traineeship pathway.

Under Career Start, you may access up to two (2) funded training places through one (1) of the following options:

  • A qualification in a certificate III under the general training pathway and an apprenticeship or traineeship. If the apprenticeship or traineeship is completed first, you are not eligible to access a general training pathway qualification under Career Start; OR
  • Two (2) apprenticeships and traineeships in either a certificate II or III (school-based apprenticeships and traineeships are included in this total).

Please click HERE to view further information regarding Career Start on the Department of Trade, Employment and Training (DTET) website.

To be eligible, you must:

  • Be aged fifteen (15) years or older, and no longer in school;
  • Permanently live in Queensland;
  • Be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, Australian permanent resident (includes humanitarian entrants), or a temporary resident with an eligible visa subclass; and
  • Not already have a certificate III or higher qualification completed within the last ten (10) years (qualifications completed as a school student, and foundation skills qualifications don’t count); or
  • Not be enrolled in another qualification, even if it’s on hold or deferred, whether funded by the Department of Trade, Employment and Training (DTET) or not (foundation skills qualification don’t count).

Along with the eligibility criteria above, specific entry requirements or exemptions may apply to certain funded qualifications and skill sets. These are set by industry or sector requirements, as well as national training package guidelines.

To be eligible, you must:

  • Have entered into a training contract for a qualification that is funded by the Department and be registered on their systems;
  • If you’re from overseas, have a visa allowing you to work in Australia; and
  • Not be enrolled in another qualification; or
  • Not have already completed two (2) apprenticeship or traineeship qualifications (including a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship) within the last ten (10) years.

To be eligible, you must:

  • Be enrolled in Year ten (10), eleven (11), or twelve (12) in a Queensland School;
  • Not be concurrently enrolled in any other qualifications funded by the Department; and
  • Have entered into a training contract (training contract) for a qualification that is funded by the Department and be registered on the Department’s training database.

School students can only access funding for a maximum of one (1) School-based apprenticeship or traineeship, this is to ensure a school student does not use their entire apprenticeship or traineeship entitlement while at school.

To be eligible, you must:

  • Be aged under twenty-five (25) years prior to entering into a training contract (commencing or recommencing);
  • Are currently employed as a Queensland apprentice or trainee (under a registered training contract) in an eligible apprenticeship or traineeship qualification through this program;
  • Be no longer enrolled at school;
  • Commence or recommence their apprenticeship or traineeship between 1 July 2025 and 30 June 2027; and
  • Not currently be enrolled in a qualification; or
  • Not exceed a maximum of two (2) government-funded apprenticeships or traineeships within a ten (10) year period.

Students will be able to be funded for a maximum two government funded Apprenticeships or Traineeships across the Career Start, Career Boost Programs and School-Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SATs). Students can receive funding for only one (1) apprenticeship or traineeship at a time.

If your course is eligible, the Queensland Government will pay the subsidy directly to MiHaven Training (RTO #40928). The level of the government subsidy depends on the demand for workers within the industry. You will need to contribute to the cost of your training through a co-contribution fee, this includes all fees associated when enrolling with MiHaven Training. Please refer to our Schedule of Fees for further information.

The Free Apprenticeships for Under 25s Program is a commitment of the National Jobs and Skills Summit to make more places fee free, allowing more Queenslanders to become skilled in areas critical for the economy.
